Bringing the Ocean Into the Classroom
When we launched the Underwater Classroom in 2020, we started with one school and a handful of curious students. Four years later, we have partnered with 12 schools across Praslin and Mahe, bringing marine science education to 500 students in 2024 alone.
Our Curriculum
The program is designed around three pillars: reef ecology, conservation science, and environmental stewardship. Students begin with classroom sessions learning about coral biology, marine food webs, and the threats facing our oceans. Then comes the exciting part -- guided snorkeling and diving excursions to see it all firsthand.
Student Impact Stories
One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing young people transform into ocean advocates. Students who complete the program regularly return as junior volunteers, helping with beach cleanups and community awareness events. Several alumni have gone on to pursue marine biology at university level.
Before the program, I thought the ocean was just for swimming. Now I understand that every creature, every coral, has a role to play. I want to protect that.
Partnerships With Schools
We work closely with the Ministry of Education to align our curriculum with national science standards. Each school receives a marine science kit with identification guides, water testing equipment, and observation journals for students.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Our goal for 2025 is to reach 800 students and expand into three new schools on La Digue. We are also developing a digital learning platform that will allow students to access virtual reef explorations and track the corals they helped plant during their program visits.
