Praslin Comes Together for the Ocean
World Ocean Day on June 8th has become one of the most anticipated events on Praslin's community calendar. This year, over 200 residents, visitors, and school groups gathered at Anse Lazio for a day of celebration, education, and hands-on conservation.
Beach Cleanup
The morning kicked off with a community beach cleanup spanning 3 kilometers of coastline. In just three hours, volunteers collected over 150 kilograms of marine debris, including plastic bottles, fishing nets, and microplastic fragments. All collected waste was sorted, documented, and sent for proper recycling.
Guided Reef Walk
At low tide, our marine biologists led guided reef walks for families, explaining the creatures and ecosystems visible in the tidal pools. Children were especially fascinated by sea cucumbers, hermit crabs, and juvenile fish sheltering in the shallow reef flats.
Education Workshops
Afternoon workshops covered topics from coral reef ecology to reducing single-use plastics at home. Our education team set up interactive stations where children could examine coral specimens under magnifying glasses and learn to identify common marine species from identification cards.
When a child picks up a piece of coral and looks at it with wonder, that is the moment conservation becomes personal. That is when the ocean gains a new guardian.
Commitment to 2025
We are already planning World Ocean Day 2025 with an expanded program, including an underwater photography exhibition, a coral planting ceremony open to the public, and a panel discussion on the future of marine conservation in the Seychelles.
