Adopt-a-Coral Update: Your Corals Are Growing!

Jean-Marc Julie|Dive Operations LeadJuly 30, 20244 min read

Your Impact Is Growing -- Literally

To every person who has adopted a coral through our program: your fragment is alive and growing. We are thrilled to share the latest monitoring data from our dive team, covering all adopted corals planted between January 2023 and June 2024.

Growth Statistics

Out of 340 adopted coral fragments, 287 (84%) are alive and showing active growth. The average fragment has grown 3.2 centimeters in diameter since planting, with some fast-growing Acropora species achieving 6+ centimeters of growth in just 12 months.

Survival by Species

Survival rates vary by species, with Porites lobata leading at 92% and the more delicate branching corals averaging around 78%. Our research team is using this data to refine future species selection for adoptions.

Challenges

The March 2024 bleaching event affected approximately 12% of adopted fragments. We intervened quickly, relocating the most stressed fragments to deeper, cooler water. Of these relocated corals, 65% have since recovered their coloration and resumed growth.

When I dive to check on adopted corals, I think of the people around the world who made it possible. Each coral has a name, a supporter, and a story. That personal connection drives us to give these fragments the best care possible.

Coming Soon: Live Tracking

We are developing a digital dashboard that will let adopters view their coral's growth photos, measurements, and health status in real time. Expected launch in early 2025.
